Rapper The Game is heading to trial over allegations of threatening and assaulting an off-duty police officer during an altercation earlier this year.

The “Dreams” hitmaker, real name Jayceon Taylor, reportedly punched Onyebuchi Awaji during a pick-up basketball game at Hollywood High School in California in March. The rapper suspected the cop had a firearm in his sports bag and maintained he was acting in self-defense.

In June, The Game was charged with one felony count of making criminal threats and a misdemeanor assault and battery charge, and on Monday, he returned to a Los Angeles courtroom to plead not guilty to the charges.

The judge ruled there was sufficient evidence for The Game to stand trial, although a start date has yet to be set.

The hip-hop star, who faces up to three years behind bars if convicted, is next due in court on January 11.
