Actor George Clooney cannot believe he found the love of his life at 52.

The Ocean’s Eleven star tied the knot with British lawyer Amal Alamuddin in a romantic ceremony in Venice, Italy in September 2014 after a year of dating, and Hollywood’s former most eligible bachelor, now 54, is still pinching himself after scoring the wife of his dreams.

“I’ve never been happier in a relationship by any stretch of the imagination,” he told Esquire. “At 52, I found the love of my life and I’m really happy.”

Clooney, who was previously wed to actress Talia Balsam in the early 1990s, has dated some of the world’s most beautiful women, but in Alamuddin, 38, the actor has truly found his soulmate, and he plans to ease up on his acting roles so they can spend as much quality time together as possible.

“The reality is… the kind of parts that I was doing, I’m not going to be doing anymore,” he explained. “Paul Newman did it best. He was a movie star, he was a leading man, and then he was like, ‘Now I’m a character actor.’ They just weren’t as often and they weren’t as much.”

Clooney still loves making movies, but the projects that appeal to him have changed over the years.

“I’m much more interested in doing films where the role makes sense for me,” he continued. “I’m not gonna be carrying movies the way I did before. There are actors you’ll see that try to hold on to this leading-man status long past the due date.”

Clooney certainly isn’t ungrateful for the success he has enjoyed, and he’s thankful for the opportunities he has been given since his Hollywood career took off in his 30s, but he feels fame is a young man’s game these days.

“(It) used to be you could be as famous as you wanted,” he said. “You show up at premieres and everybody cheers and you sign autographs, and then you go off and you drive out to a restaurant and go to dinner and you’d be left alone.

“Every once in a while some paparazzi would sneak around, but now everybody’s got a phone. I’m just lucky that the advent of camera phones happened when I was 43-years-old or something.”
