Gwyneth Paltrow: ‘I Was Not a Spoiled Hollywood Rich Kid’
Gwyneth Paltrow has dismissed suggestions she was a spoiled Hollywood rich kid, insisting her parents refused to bail her out financially when she took up acting.
The Iron Man star’s late father, Bruce Paltrow, was a director, and her mother is actress Blythe Danner, but Paltrow is adamant she did not launch her own career off the back of her parents’ money.
The Oscar winner revealed she was left penniless after quitting college to take up acting because her father refused to help her out, and she is convinced the approach gave her a healthy attitude toward money.
“I’ve never taken a dime off my parents, I’m completely self-made,” she told Glamour magazine. “I went to UC Santa Barbara, and when I quit to try to be an actress, my dad was like, ‘That’s great, but I’m not gonna help you.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, right.’ And he was like, ‘No, I’m not.’ So I got an apartment with a roommate; I worked as a hostess at a restaurant; I would scrounge quarters to buy Starbucks and walk there to save gas. I remember once asking my dad for money, like, ‘Please, I’m really stuck. Can you help?’ And he said, ‘You’re more than welcome to come over for dinner.’ That was it.”
