Lee used the small town of Monroeville as a model for the imaginary town of Maycomb, the setting of her classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide since its release in 1960.

The book tells the tale of white lawyer Atticus Finch defending a black man accused of rape in the Deep South in the 1930s. Gregory Peck starred in the 1962 film adaptation of the book, and won a Best Actor Oscar for his role as Finch.

Lee released a sequel, Go Set a Watchman, in 2015.
