Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly set to make an action thriller based on the real-life search for a fugitive fishing ship.

According to editors at The Tracking Board, the actor will produce the movie, titled The Outlaw Ocean, through his production company Appian Way for internet video streaming service Netflix.

Based on a series of articles by investigative journalist Ian Urbina published in The New York Times Magazine, The Outlaw Ocean will apparently tell the story of how a vigilante crew stalked a notorious fish poaching ship across 10,000 miles and three oceans.

In March, it was announced that DiCaprio, a committed environmental activist, had signed a deal with Netflix to produce non-fiction based films and documentaries about controversial environmental themes.

When the deal was announced, DiCaprio said that in partnering with the company he hoped it would enable him to promote conservation issues and gain a wider audience for filmmakers taking on topics dear to his heart.

“There’s never been a more critical time for our planet or more of a need for gifted storytellers to help us all make sense of the issues we face,” he told Variety.

“Through this partnership with Netflix, I hope to give documentary filmmakers doing urgent and important work the chance to have their films seen immediately by audiences all around the world.”

At the time of WENN going to press, it was not yet known if the actor will star in as well as produce the film.
