In the last couple seasons in the NFL, there seemed to be a change in the way offensive football was being played. Instead of an emphasis on a down-and-dirty, run-based attack, every team in the league decided to air it out. This type of change in mentality happens often in the NFL, and now, it seems there is a new change: kickers…forgetting how to kick.

In the early games alone, kickers missed over ten extra points. Perhaps this is due to the rule change of extra points being moved back ten yards, or, an emphasis on kicking seems to be downgraded at the college level. In total, kickers set a record for missing the most extra points in a week. With that being said, Sunday had a lot of odd final scores, along with the debut of the league’s number one overall pick.

Let’s start with Thursday night’s divisional matchup between the New Orleans Saints and the Carolina Panthers. Carolina was able to pull out the victory 23-20, but it did not come without a cost: All-Pro middle linebacker Luke Keuchly was lost to an apparent concussion, but it was the star’s reaction that sent reverberations around to fans and viewers, showcasing the danger of playing the game:

Elsewhere in divisional action, the Indianapolis Colts brought the Tennessee Titans bandwagon to a screeching halt with a 24-17 victory. The Titans made it exciting, but they just couldn’t keep up with the Colts’ assault. Even when it looked like the Titans had come up with a big play, the Colts made something happen, including this touchdown by T.Y. Hilton:

In non-divisional action, the Minnesota Vikings were finally able to stop the bleeding, beating and battering Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer on the way to a 30-24 victory. This win not only ended their four-game losing streak, but it was as complete a victory as you could ask for, getting plays from the offense, defense, and special teams:

Number one overall pick Jared Goff was finally able to suit up and lead the Los Angeles Rams in his debut. Feeling pressure from the fans and ownership, Coach Jeff Fisher decided to give the rookie his chance. And it was going well…ish. Goff didn’t throw a touchdown, but with the help of his defense, the Rams took a 10-0 lead into the fourth quarter. Then a defensive collapse of epic proportions proceeded, and Miami scored two TDs with under five minutes remaining for a 14-10 victory, spoiling the rookie quarterback’s debut. Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill made a number of clutch throws late, but it was this superhuman effort by receiver Jarvis Landry that swung the tide:

Oh, and the Browns lost. Again.
