Robert Downey Jr.: ‘Gwyneth Paltrow Is My Free Pass’
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man co-star Gwyneth Paltrow is his “free pass.”
The 51-year-old actor has been married since 2005, but in an interview on The Howard Stern Show on Thursday, Downey Jr. joked that he has been given a “free pass” by his spouse with co-star Paltrow.
The “free pass” concept involves a couple allowing their partner to sleep with someone of their choice. It usually involves non-celebrity couples listing a showbiz star on their list, but Susan Downey has chosen someone a bit closer to home.
“My free pass is – because her and Susan are such good friends – is Paltrow,” Downey Jr. laughed in the interview. “I gotta get her back in these movies so I can make out with her onscreen again.”
He later added that the free pass only applies if he and Paltrow are “rolling on a take,” concluding: “I’m very happily married!”
Downey Jr. has been on a huge press tour for his new movie Captain America: Civil War, and was asked in another interview who out of his co-stars he would choose as a free pass for his wife.
“I’m gonna go Paul Bettany, you know?” Downey Jr. told Entertainment Tonight. “He’s got that European, British flair.”
Bettany previously voiced Iron Man’s computer pal Jarvis and now stars as The Vision in the Avengers franchise.
Downey Jr. has barely had a day off since embarking on the Captain America press tour. However, he has enjoyed every second of the process and has his favorites of the stops.
“I’m from New York, so I gotta say New York, but I mean, Berlin was amazing, Paris was a blast, London is always fun,” he said. “I got to swing through San Francisco on the way home for a minute. I love the planet. I’m glad to be on the planet.”
