O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou dog, Romeo? Unlike most Romeo and Juliet stories, this one doesn’t end in tragedy.

The Romeo in this tale is an orange Tabby cat while his Juliet is a miniature Schnauzer. The two were found living on the streets in California, according to ABC News, and brought to Chula Vista Animal Care Facility where they refuse to be apart.

ABC reports that a passersby found the pair hiding under a car and cuddling.

“And when they were brought in together, they immediately showed they didn’t want to be separated and they physically tried to stay together,” said Amanda Mills, an administrator at the shelter.

Even though cats and dogs are kept in separate sections of the shelter, it was apparent that these two would be having none of that. When they were separated at the beginning of their stay, Mills said that Romeo began to get sick.

“Romeo got kind of sick, pretty depressed. He wasn’t eating well, and he was lethargic and didn’t want to play. Even his coat and fur weren’t in good condition,” she said. So, the staff got together and made extra room for Romeo in Juliet’s enclosure.

“They just needed to be together,” Mills said. “As soon as Romeo saw Juliet again, he just perked right up. The cat finally started playing and eating again.”

The shelter is now hoping the pair will be adopted, but only if they are kept together, of course.

“They are very clearly bonded, which is very unusual,” she said. “We’ve had two dogs bonded or two cats, but never a dog and a cat. It’s definitely a first for our shelter, and we’re very glad to have them here.”
