On Monday, Jimmy Kimmel set the Internet on fire when he debuted the world premiere full-length trailer for the highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War.

Actors Chris Evans (Captain America) and Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) dropped in for an unscheduled visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where the two Avengers delivered the “big surprise” Kimmel had teased earlier in the show/ (Because what better way to prepare for Thanksgiving family arguments than watching superhero brothers in arms beat each other senseless?)

Rumors had it fans would get their first glimpse of the Civil War trailer before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, due to release next month. There’s no word yet on why the trailer was suddenly released or if the studio had always planned an independent release of the footage. However, the decision may have been motivated by leaked footage and details from the Asia Pop Comic Con trailer shown two months ago.

It’s safe to say that this trailer is much more fulfilling and illuminating than the 16 second-long teaser that was released during a June Comic Con panel. The new full-length trailer gives us a glimpse into the plot line of the new film, showing Captain America going up against government agencies and even his Avenger pal Iron Man in order to protect himself and his best friend turned brainwashed super soldier, Bucky Barnes. Oh yeah, and Marvel also gave us a glimpse at this awesome new poster:

The upcoming film will feature by far the most characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe of any other beside The Avengers films.  The trailer gives us a look at Captain America alumni Anthony Mackie as Falcon and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, but we can expect old favorites including Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlett Witch), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and more to play a substantial role in the film.  The film will also introduce a number of new characters, including Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as our beloved heroes choose their sides.

The biggest disappointment for fans was the conspicuous absence of Spider-Man. After an exhaustive battle to wrest control of the Spider-Man franchise from Sony, the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally has gained control of the property and confirmed that actor Tom Holland will make his debut as the web-slinger in Civil War. But fans will just have to wait until they get their first glimpse of the rebooted superhero.

Captain America: Civil War will be released in theaters worldwide on May 6, 2016.
