Sheila E is releasing a new track in honor of her friend, one-time lover, and collaborator Prince.

The Purple Rain singer’s passing in April inspired Sheila E, who performed and recorded as part of his band throughout the 1980s, to pen a song in his memory.

Sheila’s track, a heartfelt piano ballad titled “Girl Meets Boy,” premiered online with an accompanying video on People.

The lyrics to the song see Sheila, who met Prince at her concert in 1978, reminiscing about her almost four decades as a close confidant of the late musician.

She sings, “I was just a girl and when I saw your face, you were just a boy, but you rocked my world and deep inside, I know that I did the same. I let your love rain down on me.”

The percussionist and songwriter penned an emotional tribute to Prince to accompany the new song, which was also published on People.

“There have been so many thoughts, words, emotions, and memories shared as a result of the loss of Prince. Even reading those last three words seem surreal,” she wrote.

Her tribute continued to document her memories of her life with Prince, sharing the details of their first meeting at Sheila’s gig, their collaborations, and time spent touring together.

It closed with the words, “I still, and always will, provide the rhythm of his music and memory, whether through my music, drums, words, or the beating of my heart.”

Sheila also paid tribute to her long time collaborator at Sunday’s BET Awards, joining stars including Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, and Janelle Monae in delivering an extended series of musical tributes at the Black Entertainment Television network hosted event.
